Context and Rationale
Ayang is dedicated to work for the development of education in the district of Majuli, Assam. We have been running a school called "The Hummingbird School" for tribal children in a remotely located village called Kulamua for a year now. The school has received a huge response from the community. School in its second year has 240 students enrolled in classes LKG to class 4.
In our work with the school children, we have seen the massive impact story telling sessions, choice reading, science experiments and maker space has brought to them in terms of literacy skills, creativity, and critical thinking. Ayang wants to take these opportunities to all children of Majuli. Considering the unique geographical and logistical constraints of Majuli, we have identified a Mobile Library and STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) Lab as the solution to reach maximum number of children in the most efficient manner.

Project Objectives

  • To instil the love of reading and enhance comprehension skills in children through story-telling, choice reading, and, innovative and fun library activities.
  • To inculcate critical thinking and enhance scientific acumen in children through guided experimentation, and maker space activities.
  • To utilize local resources to connect to theories science and maths learned in school

Project Activities

The program will comprise of a moving van equipped with books, journals, magazines and resources for science experimentation and project making. There will be two sessions of 2 hours each per week in each selected school. The activity planned under library sessions in schools includes storytelling, book talks, read aloud and read for pleasure. In the science sessions we will also have practical experimentations that connect with the science theories taught at schools. The students will also be provided with resources to develop things based on their curiosity with the maker space sessions.

Expected Impact

One fully equipped vehicle can support the library and STEM education of 10 schools, effectively 500 children.

  • The activities increase children’s literacy skills and science knowledge, directly effecting academic levels positively.
  • Children are better critical thinkers.
  • Children love learning.
